The Police Officer's Association of the Lake Havasu, Arizona, Police Department wanted an 'updated' look for their badge artwork. The association's emblem was a retired style of duty badge ...even badges retire to calmer duties! The request was to use the provided example of the old badge and make it more "cutting edge. The project went through some deviation from the original idea to explore options, and ended up incorporating new elements into a basically preserved original badge design. This emblem is the association's official 'logo', used on stationery, shirts, caps, promotional items and more. |

The original image was provided in the form of a scanned image, and it was obvious that the image had been through many permutations over the years. The image, while basically clear, lacked detail which created a slight challenge in replicating it's fundamental elements faithfully.

Some research provided a selection of badge images which, between them, supplied additional detail. During the course of providing interim progress images to the client, it was requested to deviate from the original badge image and replace certain elements with others. In particular, the edge wreaths and center emblem. The inset wording was to change according to the original plan. Using another set of badge images the following revision became the first 'finished' image.
The scales of justice were replaced with an out-take of the Arizona State flag. Replacing the original wreaths were a continuous length of chain overlaid with stars and circular nodes. Laid in behind is a light-burst pattern the client found attractive in other badge designs. Of particular importance was to replace the eagle's head of the original with something more "powerful". The redundant scroll work was removed right below the eagle, and to fill the blank space the eagle was given feet and talons. |

After review and discussion, tradition prevailed and it was decided to maintain the major elements of the original badge, including the wreaths and the scroll shapes. However, the light-burst pattern was to remain. The following image merged elements from the first finished image with the original elements of the badge. elements. This became the final design.
