Fire Departments and the Firefighters who work in them are heroes to everyone. Since 9/11 the men and women in Fire Services everywhere have been elevated to a new level of respect because of the dedication and bravery their brothers and sisters on the FDNY demonstrated that day. A little known fact is that in the early days, fire fighting was done by private companies If a person was under protection of a certain "fire company" they would hang a designation plaque outside their door to indicate they were protected. If no plaque or the wrong plaque was outside a house, the fire company would pass it by even if it were ablaze.

In modern times we have made fire departments a tax-paid municipal service to which all residents are entitled to be protected ... but at least now you know why modern fire services are still made up of "companies"!
